Fubar Friday (5/18/12)

Hey everyone,

I've spent the majority of this week working on the MBF Experience system and it's coming along nicely. I also pounded out the leveling curve and I think it fits very well with the XP system. In about an hour of playing several levels, I was able to level from 1 to 20. It took one of our other testers roughly 30 hours to level from 1 to 50, so there should be an adequate challenge in reaching level 100.

As far as the UI goes, its in the works. Here's a quick look at the XP bar in-game. [Click on the image for a larger version]

And your Level / XP on the user profile.

And look, you only need 470,450 XP to reach level 98!

Next week i'll elaborate more on the credits system once the XP and leveling system has all the bugs worked out.

Fubar Friday (5/11/12)

Hey folks,

Jeff reminded me today was Friday - I almost forgot to put one of these up. I am super excited due to the fact that my Druid obtained his 1.0 (I'll post about that in a minute). First though, let me discuss the beta invites again.

Beta invites will begin on June 1st, 2012. You will be notified via the E-mail you provided when you registered on the website when your account status has been bumped up for Beta access. Please be aware that you will also be granted access to future Beta participation events for DedalusTech (pretty slick, right?).

Once your account has been granted Beta access, you will be able to download weekly builds for Marble Blast Fubar. The purpose of this late-development Beta is to test the in-game leveling and online leaderboard systems, though a select few of you will be chosen to test out a couple hidden features we have yet to discuss.

To those of you who did not register prior to May 1st, you will have your own chance at (potentially) entering into the Beta phase. Registering before now and August 1st, 2012 will grant you access to another unique marble-skin for Marble Blast Fubar (similar, but different to the Beta users), and possibly early-access to MBF when it releases (Does that mean MBF will release in the fall? =] )

Keep all of the dates in mind, mark your calendars, the countdown has begun..

Fubar Friday (5/4/12)

Happy Friday!

I've been working all week on another coding assignment for one of my college courses, and I just submitted it less than an hour ago. Glad to get that off my chest. With that being said, today starts the official starting day of pure MBF coding goodness. Expect to see a lot of interesting new and exciting content leaks in the next few weeks!

Oh, and remember how I was telling everyone to register on the DedalusTech website before May 1st? Well...that's because we need to stress test the DedalusTech leaderboards system. I will be contacting Simon at some point next week to discuss possibly upgrading the servers and finalizing the leaderboard implementation. Once we've debugged anything server-side, we'll start slowly upgrading user accounts to gain Early-Access to Marble Blast Fubar and Leaderboards.

If you registered before May 1st, continue to log in every day and check under the MBF navigation button for a Beta* link. This link will contain further information regarding how to obtain Early Access downloads of Marble Blast Fubar. These versions of MBF are -not complete-, and will only feature a few levels for a short period of time. The goal is to test a series of levels and the stress testing of the leaderboards for certain levels.

Oh, and in addition to the cool DedalusTech marble skin you'll receive for signing up before May 1st, for every stress test you participate in, you will receive a unique aura exclusive to that testing phase for the live game client when it is released.

This system may seem a little confusing at first. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to post below and I'll do my best to respond as always.

Fubar Friday (4/27/12)

Hey folks,

Today I'm going to talk a little bit about the back-end for the leaderboards system MBF is going to implement. It's currently active on DedalusTech, but the access is restricted to..well, me. Eventually, I'll open it up to the public so you can get an idea of the format and the searching functionality. Basically, you'll be able to view all users, but it will show the users with the top 25 levels & experience by default. You can manipulate different viewing settings, such as sorting by credits, levels completed, achievements completed, marble stats, etc.

The leaderboards system works by syncronising your preferences file with the online database. The connection stream will require your system to have internet access to update your online profile, and it will do so automatically when a sustainable connection is available. There are several checks and balances that the server computes in order to prevent cheating and hacking. There is also a hashing system that will prevent reverse-editing of the log files generated by the database.

So, to access the Leaderboards (once they go life), you will be able to find it under the MBF dropdown menu (Leaderboards). You can view the top 25 and manipulate it however you'd like. In order to allow your system to upload the prefs file to DedalusTech, you will need to associate your Marble Blast Fubar game with your DedalusTech.com account. This will be done in the in-game options menu (under a new tab, Online Settings). You will also be able to change several settings in the online tab, such as displaying your level and stats anonymously.

That's about it for now...I can't really give out more information about the Leaderboards since it's still in an early working state.

Oh, make sure you sign up and register on DedalusTech before May 1st so you can test leaderboard features...and such..
